Manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that the plan is for Gray (forearm) to pitch again before the end of the season, Carl Steward of the Bay Area News Group reports.

Surgery will not be necessary to address Gray's forearm injury, as an MRI revealed a strain and inflammation but no structural damage. That said, the A's will proceed cautiously with Gray, and reading between the lines of Melvin's comments, it would seem a return before the end of the season is not necessarily a given. This has been a lost season so far for the 26-year-old, as he's gone 5-11 with a 5.74 ERA and 1.50 WHIP ahead of his first winter of arbitration eligibility.
