Davis elected free agency Saturday after the Padres outrighted him to Triple-A El Paso.
Davis has fewer than three years of MLB service time, but because he had previously been outrighted off a 40-man roster earlier in his career, he had the ability to reject an assignment to the minors in lieu of free agency. The 31-year-old southpaw shouldn't have much trouble landing elsewhere on a minor-league deal after turning in a 3.10 ERA over 29 innings for El Paso in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League before struggling in his seven innings with the Padres (9.00 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 6:5 K:BB).
