Reed rejected an outright assignment to the minors Friday and elected free agency, radio broadcaster Steve Carney reports.
Reed recorded a 3.72 ERA in 9.2 innings for the Rays before spending most of the season on the injured list, first with a thumb injury and then following thoracic outlet surgery. He looked good in seven rehab outings to end the year, striking out 12 batters over 7.1 scoreless innings, so he'll seemingly be at full health heading into next season.
