The Cubs designated Bote for assignment Friday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Bote hasn't started a game for Chicago since July 28 and has netted merely four at-bats since then. While the Cubs have struggled to find a spot in the lineup for the 31-year-old, he's been successful when given an opportunity, slashing .301/.333/.391 in 48 plate appearances this season. His spot on the 26-man roster is expected to go to Luis Vazquez while Gavin Hollowell -- who was claimed off waivers from Arizona -- takes Bote's spot on the 40-man roster. The utility player should garner some interest on waivers.
