The Cubs designated Fargas for assignment Wednesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
Fargas was a casualty from the 40-man roster after the Cubs needed to create a spot for their starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Reds, Adrian Sampson, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Iowa. After coming over from the Mets in late July on a waiver claim, Fargas appeared in 13 games for Chicago and hit .269 with one stolen base. Michael Hermosillo should serve as the Cubs' clear fourth outfielder now that Fargas is out of the picture.
