Hummel served as the designated hitter and batted leadoff against left-handed starter Sean Manaea in Friday's 3-0 loss to San Diego. He went 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
Hummel is a switch-hitting outfielder and one of the few righty hitters available for Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. This would have been a spot for Jordan Luplow, but his oblique injury landed him on the injured list to start the season. More will be learned about Lovullo's plans against southpaws Sunday, when San Diego's scheduled starter is lefty Blake Snell.
