According to the Tampa Bay Times, Rays starting pitcher Drew Smyly may not pitch again for the rest of this season. Smyly may make one more start, but with his innings total already at 153 for the season, he could get shut down immediately. He has already exceeded his previous career high by 36 innings.
Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman and manager Joe Maddon are expected to meet with other club officials within the next few days to decide upon a course of action for Smyly, who was acquired from the Tigers at the July 31 trade deadline. He was a key part of the package received by the Rays in exchange for former ace David Price.
Smyly turned in the latest of a series of strong performances on Saturday when he held the Orioles to one run over six innings.
