Syndergaard will be placed on the 10-day disabled list after an MRI revealed he suffered a partial tear of his right lat muscle; he is out indefinitely.

The unfortunate news comes a day after Syndergaard was lifted just 1.1 innings into his start after reaching toward his lat area following a second-inning pitch that caused him noticeable discomfort. The Mets haven't pinpointed an official timetable for Syndergaard's return, though it should be noted that teammate Steven Matz was forced to spend around two months on the DL with a similar injury in 2015, so it seems likely that the 24-year-old will be sidelined for extended time. In the meantime, Sean Gilmartin appears to be in line to gain a rotation spot, though Rafael Montero could get a look as well.
