Hernandez elected to become a free agent Wednesday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
Hernandez cleared waivers after being removed from the Astros' 40-man roster, but he'll hit the free-agent market rather than accept an outright assignment. The right-handed reliever holds a career 7.06 ERA and 26:13 K:BB over 21.2 innings covering parts of three big-league seasons.
