Mercado was released by the Padres on Monday.
Mercado put up a 1.068 OPS with 10 homers and 10 steals in 31 games with Triple-A El Paso after signing a minor-league deal in July. He didn't see an imminent opportunity with the big-league club, though, so he's exercised an opt-out and will look for a gig elsewhere.
