The Padres designated Edwards for assignment Monday.
The move makes room on the 40-man roster for the reinstatement of right-hander Joe Musgrove (elbow) from the 60-day injured list. Edwards was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday, and in his lone outing against the Pirates that same day, he allowed two walks and one hit without recording an out. He has a 1.85 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 24.1 innings in El Paso this season.
