The Padres selected Edwards' contract from Triple-A El Paso on Thursday.
Edwards has worked exclusively as a reliever over parts of nine seasons in the big leagues, but he's been operating as a starter since catching on with the Padres in July on a minor-league deal. Over his four starts with El Paso, Edwards compiled a 4.76 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 18:12 K:BB in 17 innings. Though he could get the chance to make his first MLB start later on in the campaign if injuries test the Padres' rotation depth, Edwards is expected to serve as a long-relief option during his first stint in the majors of 2024.
