The Padres selected McCoy's contract from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

McCoy will reach the big leagues for the second time in his career after previously getting a cup of coffee with the Blue Jays late in the 2023 season. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a decent season at El Paso with a .260/.329/.382 slash line and 25 stolen bases over 432 plate appearances, though it comes with the caveat that he's much older than most of his competition and has done most of his damage at hitter-friendly ballparks. McCoy is capable of playing both middle-infield spots and will give the Padres another option at shortstop while Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) is on the shelf, though Tyler Wade looks like he'll be first in line to replace Kim in the everyday lineup.
