Johnson was released from minor league camp on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The 36-year-old former first baseman tried to reinvent himself as a knuckleball pitcher before the Rays released him. Johnson signed a minor league deal with Tampa Bay earlier this month after seeing 21 plate appearances for the Cardinals in 2015. Johnson previously played 81 games for the Rays spanning from 2008 to 2011, mainly as a first baseman. The chances of another team signing Johnson this late in the spring are pretty slim.
