Johnson was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with left elbow inflammation, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
He gave up seven runs over 1.1 innings Friday, so perhaps this explains why he was so ineffective. Right-hander Marcus Walden was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move.
