The Red Sox designated Potts for assignment Tuesday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
One of two prospects the Red Sox acquired in the August 2020 deal that sent Mitch Moreland to San Diego, Potts didn't develop as hoped upon joining Boston's organization. The 23-year-old third baseman spent the entire 2021 campaign at Double-A Portland, posting a .646 OPS while striking out in 32.6 percent of his plate appearances. Assuming he clears waivers and stays in the organization, Potts will likely report back to Portland to begin the 2022 season.
