Double-A Portland placed Mayer on the 7-day injured list Thursday with hip irritation, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
Mayer missed just under a week of action shortly after the All-Star break due to a pectoral injury, but it's a hip issue that he suffered Tuesday that has prompted Portland to deactivate him. The expectation is that he'll need only a minimum stint on the IL. Mayer has had a big bounce-back season in 2024 following a disappointing 2023 campaign, slashing .307/.370/.480 with eight homers and 13 stolen bases with Portland.
