The Royals placed Oaks (hip) on the 60-day injured list Thursday.
The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for first baseman Frank Schwindel, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Omaha. Oaks is recovering from hip surgery and isn't expected to be ready to resume baseball activities until around the All-Star break.
