Splitsville is turning double digits with its 10th installment this week and we're bringing it to you a little early so you can prepare for the big upcoming scoring period.
Week 10 sees the second coming of interleague play for most teams over the second half of the period. A lot happened during Week 9 with Armando Galarraga's near perfect game and the retirement of one of the best players of all time, Ken Griffey Jr. We'll touch on Galarraga below but we'd like to take this opportunity to showcase Junior's best career splits: A career .284 hitter with 630 home runs and 1,836 RBI, Griffey was at his best against the Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles with a career .313 average against each. His 42 homers against the Twins were his most against any team and he drove in more runs (130) against the Brewers than anyone else.
Baseball is sad to see Griffey go. Now, on to the Week 10 splits:
Five Strikes (Positive Splits)
Nick Markakis, OF, Orioles
Upcoming Schedule:
Three games vs. N.Y. Yankees, Three games vs. N.Y. Mets
Batting .300
on the season over 200 at-bats, Markakis is really the only acceptable
Orioles hitter at the moment. Heading into the second portion of
interleague play in Week 10, when the Orioles meet the Mets at Camden
Yards, it should prove a solid week for Markakis -- if not for the O's.
Markakis is a career .322 hitter during interleague play, including
going 4 for 13 (.308) against the Nationals earlier this season. More
specifically against the Mets, Markakis has owned them during his young
career with a .455 batting average over 22 at-bats. Markakis is better
against the Mets, by far, than any other team in baseball that he's seen
at least 25 plate appearances against. Always playing up to the level of
his competition, Markakis is a career .309 hitter against the Yankees
and went 24 for 73 (.329) with five homers and 14 RBI against them last
season.
Cole Hamels, SP, Phillies
Upcoming Schedule: June
7 start vs. San Diego, June 12 start at Boston
Rain shortened his
last start to only 2/3 of an inning but Hamels still lost his second
straight to fall to 5-4 on the season for the Phillies. Still, he hasn't
been pitching terribly and Week 10's two-start scoring period is going
to afford him some very good numbers, at least according to the splits.
Hamels has faced the Padres seven times during his career and is 3-1
against them with a 3.35 ERA with 30 strikeouts over 43 innings pitched.
That is solid but his brightest split this week is his history against
the Red Sox. Hamels has made two career starts against Boston and is
2-0, beating them once this season already with one run allowed on three
hits over seven innings with eight Ks. Hamels has allowed a total of
three runs on 10 hits over 14 innings in his two starts against the Red
Sox with 13 strikeouts over that span.
Brian Bannister, SP, Royals
Upcoming Schedule:
June 12 start at Cincinnati
Bannister deserves to be owned in more
than just 11 percent of Fantasy leagues as the Royals starter has won
his last four consecutive starts after beating the Angels during Week 9.
At 5-3, Bannister is hitting his stride. Interestingly enough, it has
coincided with what could prove, based on the splits, to be his most
effective start of the season. Bannister may start once in Week 10 but
it comes against a team which he dominated. With one career start
against the Reds, coming last season, Bannister shut them out over eight
strong innings with just four hits and a walk allowed. Something about
that red jersey must agree with him. Bannister has already made one
interleague start this season back on May 21 at home against the
Rockies. He won that start with two runs allowed on seven hits over 7
1/3 innings in his longest start of the year to date.
Willie Harris, OF, Nationals
Upcoming Schedule:
Three games vs. Pittsburgh, Three games at Cleveland
Harris isn't
even hitting at the Mendoza line this season with a .186 batting average
over his first 86 at-bats. Regardless of splits, you'd be silly to be
using him in mixed Fantasy leagues. That said, Harris does have some
value for Week 10. In fact, Harris will face his favorite team to hit
against in all of Major League Baseball. Harris is a career .366 hitter
against the Pirates over 41 at-bats. That is his highest batting average
against any team in the majors, regardless of the number of at-bats he's
had against them. His .561 slugging percentage against Pittsburgh is 40
points higher than against his next-best opponent (Toronto). He also has
his best on-base percentage against the Bucs with a .458 spot.
A.J. Burnett, SP, N.Y. Yankees
Upcoming Schedule:
June 10 start at Baltimore
On the heels of a two-start winning streak
to improve to 6-2 on the season with a 3.28 ERA, Burnett already seems
like a smart play in Week 10 despite making only one appearance in the
scoring period. If there were any doubts, however, a quick look at his
career splits against the Orioles should give you 100 percent certainty
that Burnett is a must-start this week. The big right-handed 11-year
veteran is 11-2 over 15 career starts against the Orioles, including
beating them twice already this season with no runs allowed and 12
strikeouts over 15 1/3 innings. Burnett has been great at Camden Yards
too with a 5-0 record and a 3.89 ERA over seven starts. One of his two
starts against the O's this year was in Baltimore where he went eight
shutout innings and four strikeouts.
Five 7-10 Splits (Negative Splits)
Ryan Dempster, SP, Chicago Cubs
Upcoming Schedule:
June 11 start vs. Chicago White Sox
Dempster hasn't exactly been the
model of consistency this season for the Cubs but Fantasy owners
continue to trust him in a large number of leagues. Making one start
during the Week 10 scoring period in the Windy City showdown against the
White Sox, we have to suggest keeping him on the bench. That's because
the White Sox have always seemed to baffle Dempster, who owns a career
5.09 ERA against them over 12 appearances and five starts. Dempster is
1-4 in his career against the South Siders and really struggled last
season to an 0-2 record with a 4.00 ERA. Dempster had trouble finding
the plate with 10 walks over 18 innings in 2009 against the White Sox
and since he's not been lights out recently, this is one single-start
week that Dempster belongs on the bench.
Bengie Molina, C, Giants
Upcoming Schedule: Four
games at Cincinnati, Three games vs. Oakland
Molina is batting .252
on the season over 147 at-bats with just 12 RBI and entered the final
series of Week 9 with just one measly hit over his previous 20 at-bats.
He's struggling hard at the moment and Week 10 doesn't figure to bring
any reprieve. Molina, facing his second round of interleague play with a
series against Oakland, has struggled over his career during the games
against the other league. He has a .253 career batting average during
interleague play and already has gone just 1 for 9 (.111) this season
when the Giants played in Oakland at the end of May. Over his career
against the Athletics, Molina is a .220 hitter with more at-bats against
Oakland than any other franchise thanks to his days playing with the
Angels. Still, for all those negative splits, the worst one of all is
his prowess at Cincinnati's Great American Ballpark. In six games there,
Molina has just one base hit over 24 at-bats. That hit came back in 2008.
Bobby Abreu, OF, L.A. Angels
Upcoming Schedule:
Four games at Oakland, Three games at L.A. Dodgers
With interleague
beginning again during the second half of Week 10, it is interesting to
note that Abreu is a career .306 hitter against the other league. He's
already 4 for 13 (.308) this season in three games. That said, with both
he and Hideki Matsui playing well of
late, somebody is going to have to sit against the Dodgers without the
use of the designated hitter. What's more, he's scheduled to face lefty Dallas Braden in Oakland and is hitting just .197 this season against
left-handed pitchers. However, his most telling splits come in Oakland,
where he is a career .232 hitter over 69 at-bats including going 7 for
37 (.189) there last season, and at Dodger Stadium, where he's just a
career .224 hitter over 134 at-bats with a slugging percentage of .381.
Armando Galarraga, SP, Tigers
Upcoming Schedule:
June 8 start at Chicago White Sox, June 13 start vs. Pittsburgh
As we
told you once before after Ubaldo Jimenez's
no-hitter, history shows most pitchers struggle in the start directly
following their no-no. For argument sake, we'll say Galarraga got his
perfect game and wasn't hosed by the umpire. The adrenaline will still
be coursing through his veins. But Galarraga has poor splits this week
not just due to the no-hitter. Instead, he's just been terrible over his
career at US Cellular and against the Pirates. Galarraga has made two
career starts at Chicago's ballpark and is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA there. He
gave up nine runs on 13 hits with six walks and three homers allowed
over 12 2/3 innings last season alone. He's only faced Pittsburgh once,
coming last season. He lost that start and gave up four runs on eight
hits and a walk and lasted just two innings. What's more, Galarraga has
been poor during interleague play the last two seasons with a 1-3 record
over five starts with 20 runs and 36 hits allowed over 22 innings. He
lost his only interleague start this year in Los Angeles with five runs
allowed over 4 2/3 frames.
Manny Ramirez, OF, L.A. Dodgers
Upcoming Schedule:
Three games vs. St. Louis, Three games vs. L.A. Angels
Ramirez will
be facing Chris Carpenter in Week 10 and
that is never an easy task -- he went 1 for 6 against him last season.
But it is the Cardinals, in general, which got the better of Manny last
season. He went 4 for 28 against them for a .143 batting average with
just one RBI in 34 plate appearances. What's more, the second week of
interleague play is beginning and despite Ramirez's career .301 average
against the opposite league, most of that is when he faced the National
League as a member of the Red Sox. He didn't fare so well against AL
pitching earlier this season when he went 1 for 8 (.125) during a
three-game series against Detroit.
