The Yankees did not recall Dominguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday, though he could still join the big club later this month, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Rather than Dominguez, the Yankees promoted another outfielder in Duke Ellis from Triple-A to fill one of the openings on the active roster, which expanded from 26 to 28 players Sunday. The decision not to promote Dominguez likely stems from the big club not having an everyday role available for the 21-year-old; Alex Verdugo, Aaron Judge and Juan Soto serve as the Yankees' regular starting outfield trio, while Giancarlo Stanton is a full-time designated hitter. Instead, the Yankees will turn to a non-prospect in Ellis to fill out a bench spot as a pinch-running specialist and late-inning defensive replacement, while Dominguez will likely stick around with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the time being to get regular at-bats. As Bryan Hoch of MLB.com notes, Dominguez will retain rookie status for 2025 if he does not exceed 130 at-bats -- he has 35 for now -- with the Yankees this season, which would allow the team to pick up a compensation pick in 2026 if he wins the 2025 American League Rookie of the Year Award. With that in mind, it wouldn't be overly surprising if Dominguez remained at Triple-A until Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's regular season ends Sept. 22.
