Gil (back) threw live batting practice with Double-A Somerset on Tuesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
After Gil threw a bullpen session Sunday, manager Aaron Boone indicated that Gil would either throw live BP or begin a rehab assignment next. While Gil is with the Yankees' Double-A affiliate, he hasn't yet began to pitch in games. There's optimism that the 26-year-old could be ready to be activated once he becomes eligible Sept. 6, so a rehab start could be the next step for Gil.
