Yankees' Luke Voit: Homers in first rehab game
Voit (knee) went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a rehab appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.
The first baseman got his rehab stint off to a promising start by smashing a solo shot in the sixth inning. He played seven frames at first base in the Triple-A contest, per Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune. While Voit is clearly on the mend, the Yankees' trade-deadline acquisition of Anthony Rizzo likely means Voit won't have an everyday role with the big club waiting for him when he's able to return. Per Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman suggested that Voit's injuries this season have led to the loss of his starting role. "He's kind of like the NFL starting quarterback where he goes down early in the year, but by the time he gets back the position is now gone," Cashman said Sunday during an interview with Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette on Sirius/XM's MLB Network Radio. The general manager did not altogether rule out the idea of Voit being a major contributor this season, however. "This guy obviously can help us. The lane that used to be so obvious currently isn't there, so obviously we are a lot deeper with everything we have. We have more choices, more protection because of it, but unfortunately right now he's going to get some at-bats and do what he does best (in rehab games), which is crush it, and then we'll see how he's going to fit as we move forward."
