Syndergaard said Monday that he's working on his mechanics and keeping his body in shape with the hope that he'll find a team to sign with ahead of the 2025 season, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Syndergaard was cut loose by the Guardians last August after turning in a 5.40 ERA over six starts, but the right-hander evidently still believes he has enough left in the tank to contribute for an MLB club. Heyman notes that the 31-year-old Syndergaard is also hoping to lose some weight prior to the 2025 campaign, and he'll likely schedule a few open throwing sessions during the offseason to attract the attention of scouts. A one-time All-Star, Syndergaard has struggled to return to peak form since he underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020.

The Guardians released Syndergaard on Wednesday. The veteran right-hander was removed from Cleveland's 40-man roster over the weekend and is now officially a free agent after passing through waivers unclaimed. Syndergaard has posted a 6.50 ERA in 18 starts this season for the Dodgers and Guardians but could latch on with some team in need of an arm to eat innings.

The Guardians designated Syndergaard for assignment Sunday, Julia Kreuz of MLB.com reports. After being acquired from the Dodgers in late July, Syndergaard made six starts for the Guardians. He was inconsistent during his time with Cleveland and will lose his spot on the 40-man roster after giving up five runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision Sunday against the Blue Jays. Cal Quantrill (shoulder) is on track to return from the 15-day injured list this week, so the Guardians no longer had room in the rotation for Syndergaard. If Syndergaard clears waivers, it wouldn't be surprising if he elects free agency in order to seek out another opportunity elsewhere during the final month of the regular season.

Syndergaard came away with a no-decision Tuesday in the Guardians' win over the Dodgers, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four. The veteran right-hander wasn't dominant, managing only nine swinging strikes among his 95 pitches, but Syndergaard did deliver his first quality start since April. He's alternated solid outings with poor ones since coming over to Cleveland at the trade deadline, but his overall 4.94 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 15:7 K:BB through 27.1 innings makes him an unappealing fantasy option in most formats. He'll look to build some momentum in his next start, likely to come this weekend in Toronto.
