The Tigers reassigned Coleman to their minor-league camp Monday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports. Detroit relied heavily on Coleman out of the bullpen last season, with the 32-year-old making 51 appearances and turning in a 3.51 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. The right-hander was still forced to settle for a minor-league deal with the Tigers this winter and didn't distinguish himself this spring, resulting in him falling out of contention for an Opening Day bullpen gig. Coleman will likely open the season at Triple-A Toledo unless he requests his release from the organization.

Coleman signed a minor-league deal with the Tigers. The 32-year-old righty was recently cast off the 40-man roster but will return to Detroit in hopes of re-earning his spot in the majors. He logged a 3.51 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 51.1 innings in 2018, but the Tigers will likely be looking to give more opportunities to their younger bullpen arms.

Coleman elected to become a free agent after being outrighted from the 40-man roster Wednesday. Coleman will search for a new home after appearing in 51 games for Detroit this season. The right-handed reliever logged a 3.51 ERA and 41 strikeouts across 51.1 innings in 2018.

Coleman recorded a blown save in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Twins, as he allowed one earned run on one hit over 1.2 innings of work. The lone hit was a big one, as Coleman gave up a three-run homer to pinch hitter Joe Mauer upon entering the game with one out in the seventh inning. Coleman pitched better from there, but the damage was already done. The 32-year-old righty now has a 3.58 ERA this season, and he should continue to see high-leverage work out of a Detroit bullpen that doesn't have many reliable options at this point.

Coleman (4-1) picked up the win in relief in Monday's 9-5 victory over the White Sox, working around two hits to pitch a scoreless inning. Coleman came into 2018 with just four total wins at the MLB level since the beginning of the 2014 season, so matching that figure this season has been quite the pleasant surprise. The 32-year-old reliever has a 3.60 ERA on the year and has been a relatively reliable option out of a weak Detroit bullpen.
