Williams has cleared waivers and was outrighted to the White Sox's alternate training site Saturday, LaMond Pope of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wiliams was designated for assignment by Chicago on Thursday, and he'll now head to the team's alternate facility in Schaumburg. The 27-year-old appeared in four games early in the season and went hitless with a walk, two runs and four strikeouts in 10 at-bats. Williams could report to Triple-A Charlotte once the minor-league season gets underway.

Williams was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Thursday. Williams had started three of the last five games ahead of highly touted prospect Andrew Vaughn in left field. That evidently didn't mean the White Sox thought too highly of him, however, as he's no longer deemed worthy of a 40-man roster spot. Williams has hit .138/.200/.224 in limited action over the last three years, so he seemingly has a good chance of passing through waivers unclaimed.

Williams' contract was selected by the White Sox on Thursday. He's starting in left field for Thursday's game against Kansas City. The White Sox placed Billy Hamilton (hamstring) on the injured list Thursday, and Williams will take his place on the major-league roster. While Andrew Vaughn should see most of the playing time in left field in Hamilton's absence, Williams is getting the first crack at it, perhaps because righty Brad Keller is starting for the Royals.

Williams was reassigned to minor-league camp Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Williams and Billy Hamilton were competing for a bench outfield spot, with the White Sox needing an extra option in the wake of Eloy Jimenez's long-term pectoral injury and Adam Engel's short-term hamstring concern. For his part, Williams made a fairly strong case this spring, hitting .300/.364/.475, but it's Hamilton who will win the job. Williams isn't on the team's 40-man roster, so he's not necessarily the next man up in the event of another injury.

Williams and Billy Hamilton are fighting for the White Sox's final roster spot, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Both outfielders started Saturday's Cactus League game -- Williams in left field and Hamilton in right -- and each had a hit in four at-bats. Whoever wins the battle will likely have a short window of opportunity. Adam Engel (hamstring) is due back within the first two weeks of the regular season.
