Krol has opted out of his minor-league deal with the Padres and is headed overseas to continue his career, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The 31-year-old lefty made 18 appearances for the Tigers last year, logging a 4.34 ERA. He had a 7.46 ERA while pitching for Triple-A El Paso in the Pacific Coast League.

Krol signed with the Padres as a non-roster invitee Friday. This veteran lefty owns a 4.49 ERA in 208.2 career major-league innings and posted a similar 4.34 ERA in 18.2 frames last season. He'll have the chance to earn a lower-leverage relief role in camp.

Krol elected free agency Friday after refusing an outright assignment to the minors. Krol tossed 18.2 innings for the Tigers this season, his first major-league action since 2018. His 4.34 ERA was nothing special, but being left-handed could make him at least somewhat interesting on the open market.

Krol's contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday. He was designated for assignment two weeks ago but was summoned to take on a low-leverage relief role with Tyler Alexander moving to the rotation.

The Tigers outrighted Krol to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. He'll remain in the organization after clearing waivers when the Tigers designated him for assignment over the weekend. The 30-year-old lefty reliever has covered 12.1 innings out of the Detroit bullpen this season, giving up seven earned runs on 18 hits and five walks.
