Santana (ribs) was released by the Braves on Wednesday. The 30-year-old pitched in 41 games for the Braves this year, compiling a 3.59 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 33 strikeouts over 42.2 innings. The move opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Tucker Davidson, who was added to the World Series roster to replace Charlie Morton (leg).

Santana was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right intercostal strain. The move is retroactive to Sept. 28. It's unclear exactly how long the right-hander has been dealing with the injury, as his only appearance in the past three weeks came on Sept. 20. Since the move is backdated, Santana will be eligible to be activated for the first game of the NLDS next Friday, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point.

Santana was reinstated from the paternity list prior to Saturday's game against the Padres. He has given up one earned run with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings across five appearances this month. Look for Santana to work in low-leverage situations down the stretch.

Santana was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. The right-hander was demoted to Gwinnett on Sunday but will quickly rejoin Atlanta with Josh Tomlin (neck) heading to the injured list. Santana has a 3.82 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 31:9 K:BB over 37.2 major-league innings this season.
