Gonzalez is absent from Sunday's lineup against Tampa Bay, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Enmanuel Valdez will start at third base and bat ninth in the Red Sox's regular-season finale. Unless he comes in to pinch hit, Gonzalez will end his first season with the Red Sox having slashed .266/.306/.417 with 11 stolen bases, six home runs and 29 RBI across 216 plate appearances.

Gonzalez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. After Rafael Devers suffered a right shoulder injury Friday before landing on the injured list a day later, Gonzalez picked up each of the ensuing three starts at third base, going 3-for-10 with a home run, a stolen base and five RBI across those contests. Though he'll give way to Nick Sogard at the hot corner Monday, Gonzalez still looks to be the Red Sox's preferred option at the position entering the final week of the season.

Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, three stolen bases and two runs scored in Saturday's 7-5 win over the White Sox. Gonzalez had not logged a steal since July 26, making him an unlikely candidate to swipe three bags in a game. Even with his show of speed Saturday, he's at 10 steals this season. The utility man has added a .285/.333/.437 slash line with four home runs, 23 RBI, 19 runs scored and 10 doubles over 174 plate appearances. He hasn't been strictly limited to a short-side platoon role, but the return of Trevor Story (shoulder) may make it tougher for Gonzalez to pick up at-bats versus righties.

Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Royals. Gonzalez's blast put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 in the third inning. The backup infielder has gone 4-for-11 with three homers and seven RBI over his last five contests, but that's a span that dates back to July 29. For the season, he's at a .284/.336/.477 slash line with four homers, 17 RBI, 13 runs scored and seven stolen bases through 120 plate appearances. Gonzalez is likely to remain as a right-handed-hitting platoon option at a number of positions, primarily second base.

Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run against the Royals in Monday's 9-5 victory. Gonzalez entered the contest in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter for Dominic Smith and promptly smashed a 452-foot, two-run homer to center field. It was his second long ball in his past four contests after he had gone deep just once over his first 98 at-bats this season. Gonzalez's overall slash line of .283/.336/.453 is pretty solid, but he doesn't see the field often enough to be a viable fantasy asset in most formats -- he plays almost exclusively against left-handed pitchers and has started just once over Boston's past seven contests.
