Tyler Kolek got the start Thursday for the GCL Miami Marlins, his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2016.The outing wasn't exactly a rousing success -- Kolek recorded only one out and was charged with four runs on a hit and two walks -- but the important thing is that he's pitching again. The 21-year-old right-hander was the second overall pick in 2014 and struggled with his control prior to surgery, so expect him to focus simply on building up some innings for the rest of the season rather than making any kind of rapid ascent up the ladder in the Marlins' system.

Marlins' Tyler Kolek: Nearing return to mound
Tyler Kolek (elbow) has been on a throwing program in extended spring training and is expected to return to game action by the end of the month, Tim Healey of the Sun-Sentinel reports.Miami Marlins president Michael Hill suggested Tuesday that Kolek has used his rehab from Tommy John surgery to smooth out his delivery, something crucial to the right-hander's development after he walked 61 batters over 108.2 innings in 2015 for Low-A Greensboro before being sidelined. The Marlins' No. 8 prospect is a long way from the majors, but he could emerge as one of the organization's top future assets if he looks good in the second half this season.

Tyler Kolek (elbow) opened the year on the 7-day DL at Low-A Greensboro, MLB.com's Mike Rosenbaum reports.He is nearly a year removed from Tommy John surgery, and is beginning the season in extended spring training before heading to Greensboro. Kolek was drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in 2014 as a big righty who could touch triple digits, but had a lot of developing to do as a pitcher, and he hasn't had much time to improve upon his weaknesses due to the elbow surgery.

Kolek still rates as one of the top prospects in a talent-starved Miami Marlins system, but in most dynasty leagues there's little reason to use a roster spot on him until he shows any kind of progress.

Tyler Kolek underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com reports.The Miami Marlins have not confirmed the report, but Kolek felt soreness in his elbow at the end of spring training, and after receiving several opinions, the decision was apparently made to send him under the knife. Kolek was taken second overall in the 2014 draft and is one of the Marlins' top prospects, but he will now be forced to spend this season recovering and rehabbing, with an eye toward getting back on the mound at some point roughly 12 months down the road.
