Mariners' Luis Castillo: Saddled with loss

Luis Castillo (0-1) was charged with the loss Friday against the Athletics after giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over five innings.Castillo kept the A's off the board until the fifth inning, when a Lawrence Butler double followed by a Brent Rooker home run put his team in a 2-0 hole. Unfortunately for Castillo, the Athletics' pitching staff was able to keep the Seattle Mariners off the board for the whole game, so the 32-year-old will end up starting the year with a loss despite a respectable effort on his part. He'll hope for a bit more run support when the Tigers come to town next week.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Solid spring continues Saturday

Luis Castillo didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's Cactus League game against San Diego after giving up two runs on five hits over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. After throwing three scoreless innings Saturday, Castillo watched Gavin Sheets go deep for one run and Connor Joe hit a double to plate another in the fourth frame. While Castillo has struggled with the long ball this spring, allowing three homers across 12.2 innings, he encouragingly hasn't yielded greater than two runs in any of his four Cactus League starts. The 32-year-old right-hander will have the benefit of working about half of his outings in 2025 at the pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park, where Castillo boasts a 2.89 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 279 strikeouts through 233.2 innings (39 starts) since joining the Seattle Mariners in 2022.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Throws side session Monday

Luis Castillo (hamstring) tossed a bullpen session Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.Castillo finished last season on the injured list after sustaining a Grade 2 left hamstring strain during his final start Sept. 8, but he appears to be facing no restrictions in the early stages of spring training. The Seattle Mariners will once again be looking to Castillo to serve as a workhorse at the top of the rotation after he made at least 30 starts in both of his first two full seasons in Seattle. Before he was shut down with the hamstring injury, Castillo went 11-12 and turned in a 3.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 175:47 K:BB across 175.1 innings.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Not ready for Houston series

Luis Castillo (hamstring) is making good progress and has thrown off a mound, but he's not expected to return from the 15-day injured list for the Seattle Mariners' three-game series in Houston that begins Monday, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.Seattle has confirmed Bryce Miller as its starter for Monday's series opener in Houston, and Logan Gilbert and George Kirby are considered "most likely" to go Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. That means Castillo likely won't return from the IL when first eligible, but he's still very much in the mix to make a final regular-season start against Oakland later in the week. Castillo currently sits with a 3.64 ERA and 1.17 WHIP in 175.1 innings this season.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: On track with progress

Luis Castillo appears to be making good progress in his recovery from a hamstring strain, and the Seattle Mariners remain cautiously optimistic that he'll be activated from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Monday, MLB.com reports. "Progressing as he should be," manager Dan Wilson said. "I don't think there's any expected date, right now, of his return, but progressing as he has. I know Luis is very diligent about getting his work in and trying to get healthy, and I think as far as we know right now, he's doing well."The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since Sept. 8, when he suffered the strain while ducking out of the way of a throw on a stolen-base attempt. Castillo's ability to make at least one more start down the stretch could be critical for the Mariners, who remain in contention for an American League wild-card spot entering the season's final week. Castillo has once again proven a consistent workhorse of Seattle's rotation this season, going 11-12 with a 3.64 ERA and 1.17 WHIP across 175.1 innings over 30 starts.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Out with hamstring strain

Luis Castillo was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The right-hander already received a platelet-rich-plasma injection and hopes to be available after spending the 15-day minimum on the shelf. Even in a best-case scenario, Castillo will only be able to rejoin the Seattle Mariners for one or maybe two starts before the end of the regular season. Seattle is currently three games back of the final AL wild-card spot and is tied with two other teams, and the playoff positioning could affect how quickly the organization elects to bring Castillo back.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Set for MRI on Monday

Luis Castillo (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on his left hamstring on Monday in Seattle, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.Castillo left Sunday's start against the Cardinals as a result of a left hamstring strain. He will now receive additional imaging on the leg to determine the severity of the injury. Manager Dan Wilson did not speculate if he believed that Castillo will be able to make his next scheduled start or not, but more information on Castillo's status will come Monday.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Departs with hamstring strain

Luis Castillo was removed from Sunday's game against the Cardinals due to a left hamstring strain, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. The right-hander had a good chance to pick up a win Sunday as Seattle scored seven runs across the first two frames, but Castillo was lifted due to the hamstring injury after giving up two runs across three innings. The severity of the issue isn't known, and it's unclear if the 31-year-old will be able to make his next turn through the rotation next weekend versus the Rangers.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Little run support Tuesday

Luis Castillo did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's loss to the Athletics, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five over seven innings.Castillo only allowed four hits but two of them went for home runs, one by Lawrence Butler in the first inning and another by Seth Brown in the fourth. Castillo has now allowed nine home runs over his last five starts, though Tuesday was his first time reaching seven innings since July 19 and his first quality start since Aug. 11. The 31-year-old righty is putting together another strong campaign, yet the Seattle Mariners are 14-15 in his starts, partially due to the fact that they've scored two runs or fewer in 11 of Castillo's outings. For the year, he owns a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 172:46 K:BB in 172.1 innings and lines up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis over the weekend.

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Solid in 11th win

Luis Castillo (11-12) picked up the win Wednesday, giving up two runs on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings in a 6-2 victory over the Rays. He struck out four. The 31-year-old right-hander left the mound after 97 pitches (60 strikes) just short of his 18th quality start of the season, but it was still a respectable performance from Castillo. In eight starts since the All-Star break, he's posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 51:11 K:BB through 48 innings. Castillo will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week in Oakland.
