Reds' Andrew Abbott: Ruled out for rest of season

Andrew Abbott (shoulder) will not return this season, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Abbott has been throwing and will continue to do so in hopes of going into the offseason without any restrictions, but there's not enough time left in the regular season for him to rejoin the Cincinnati Reds' rotation. The left-hander will finish with a 3.72 ERA and 114:52 K:BB over 138 innings covering 25 starts for Cincinnati this season.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Could return from IL next week

Andrew Abbott (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports. The side session was Abbott's second since he landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 23 with a left shoulder strain. Abbott is expected to face hitters in live batting practice this weekend, and if all goes well, he could return from the IL next week to make one final appearance before the end of the regular season. Given that he'll have missed more than a month and won't have the benefit of making a minor-league appearance beforehand if he's activated, Abbott is expected to be limited to a relief role.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Begins throwing program

Andrew Abbott (shoulder) began a throwing program Wednesday, MLB.com reports.Abbott was shut down for nearly two weeks with a left shoulder strain but has been cleared to ramp things back up again. It's going to take him a while to be built back up to start a game for the Cincinnati Reds, but the hope is that he can make it back before the end of the season. Abbott has collected a 3.72 ERA and 114:52 K:BB over 138 innings covering 25 starts for Cincinnati in 2024.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Placed on IL

The Cincinnati Reds placed Andrew Abbott on the 15-day injured list Friday with a left shoulder strain.Abbott was initially the Reds' probable pitcher for Friday's game against the Pirates, but Cincinnati named reliever Buck Farmer as the opener before eventually putting Abbott on the shelf. If the left-hander can return when first eligible Sept. 4, he'd only miss one more start. Cincinnati recalled Alan Busenitz from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move, and he could fill Abbot's spot in the rotation after getting stretched out to four innings and 45 pitches in his last appearance for Louisville on Aug. 17. Abbott has a 3.72 ERA across 138 innings spanning 25 starts this season.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Likely for bulk innings Friday

Andrew Abbott won't start Friday against the Pirates but could be available in bulk relief, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.Abbott was originally listed as the probable pitcher for Friday's game, but the Cincinnati Reds have since named Buck Farmer as the official starter. Farmer hasn't completed more than two innings in any appearance this season, so he'll presumably be in store for an abbreviated outing before Abbott likely enters the game and covers several frames.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Saddled with 10th loss

Andrew Abbott (10-10) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Royals. He struck out four.Abbott didn't pitch particularly poorly but was mainly done in by the ninth spot in the order, with Dairon Blanco leading off the third with a bunt single and a stolen base that eventually led to the initial run, then a homer by Blanco in the fifth that pushed the deficit to three. An additional run scored on a sac fly, and Abbott's outing was over after five innings. Sunday marked the eighth consecutive outing for Abbott in which he's alternated allowing two runs or less followed immediately by four runs or more. It was also his fourth loss in five decisions after winning eight of his previous 10. If the trend holds, Abbott would notch a quality start during his next outing, and the matchup seems to fall in line with that possibility as he's next slated for a road matchup against the punchless Pirates.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Picks up 10th win

Andrew Abbott (10-9) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the Cardinals. He struck out six.Abbott rebounded from allowing three homers in his last start to shut down the Cardinals, with a Nolan Arenado run-scoring single in the third representing the lone blemish against him. Abbott was on track to complete seven innings while allowing one run or fewer for the fifth time this season, but a two-out error by Elly De La Cruz extended the inning and Abbott was pulled after tossing 93 pitches. The 25-year-old lefty has now tossed a career-high 133 innings while holding a 3.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 110 strikeouts. He's next scheduled for a home matchup against the Royals.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Hit hard in Wednesday's loss

Andrew Abbott (9-9) took the loss Wednesday, coughing up six runs on six hits -- including three home runs -- and three walks over five innings as the Cincinnati Reds fell 6-4 to the Marlins. He struck out seven. The Ks helped salvage some fantasy value for Abbott, but the southpaw continues to have trouble keeping the ball in the yard, serving up a pair of solo shots to Jake Burger and a grand slam to Derek Hill. Abbott's been tagged for eight homers over his last five starts and 23.1 innings, stumbling to a 6.56 ERA and 1.93 WHIP over that stretch. He'll try to turn things around in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Cardinals.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Fans eight in loss

Andrew Abbott (9-8) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Giants.Abbott was tagged with a pair of runs in the second inning, including a solo shot by Casey Schmitt, and the lefty was on the opposite end of Blake Snell's no-hitter in this one. Abbott needed 90 pitches to get through 4.1 frames and forced 13 whiffs. He failed to complete at least five innings for the third time in his last four starts, and he's posted a 5.40 ERA while going 0-2 during that stretch. For the season, Abbott owns a 3.41 ERA with a 97:46 K:BB through 22 starts. He's currently lined up for a start in Miami next week.

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Hit hard in Tampa

Andrew Abbott (9-7) took the loss Saturday, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks over four-plus innings as the Cincinnati Reds were downed 4-0 by the Rays. He struck out two.The southpaw fired 60 of 88 pitches for strikes but was getting too much of the plate, as six of the eight hits off him went for extra bases including back-to-back homers in the fifth inning by Alex Jackson and Yandy Diaz. Abbott has been erratic in July -- three of his five trips to the mound resulted in quality starts in which he allowed just one total run, but he got torched for nine runs in 7.1 innings in the other two outings. He'll take a 3.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 89:45 K:BB through 117 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Giants.
