Rays' Shane McClanahan: Expected to be healthy for camp

Tampa Bay Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Tuesday that he expects Shane McClanahan (triceps) to be "fully ready" for the start of spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.McClanahan was limited to just two rehab starts in 2025 due to a nerve issue in his left triceps, an injury which eventually required surgery in August. The expectation is that he will have a relatively normal offseason and be on a regular pitching schedule for spring training. That said, it's an uncommon injury McClanahan is coming back from, and the fact that he experienced numerous starts and stops this season should give fantasy managers pause with the southpaw heading into 2026. McClanahan hasn't pitched in a major-league game since August 2023, having gone Tommy John surgery that month, so he could have some workload restrictions in 2026 even if he's healthy, Neander acknowledged.

Rays' Shane McClanahan: Done for season

Shane McClanahan (triceps) underwent a surgical procedure on his left arm Monday, ending any chance of him returning in 2025, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.McClanahan has been sidelined for the entirety of the 2025 campaign to this point while working his way through a lingering nerve issue in his pitching arm. The left-hander was able to pitch in three minor-league rehab starts in July before he had a flare up of biceps discomfort, forcing him to pull back on his ramp up. McClanahan hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2023, but this procedure could have him ready for spring training in 2026.

Rays' Shane McClanahan: Dealing with biceps soreness

Manager Kevin Cash said Shane McClanahan (triceps) won't make his rehab start as scheduled Thursday due to biceps soreness, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports. The Tampa Bay Rays will be "pulling back" on the left-hander's throwing for a few days, though it's worth noting that the biceps issue isn't believed to be related to the nerve problems in his triceps that landed him on the injured list in late March. McClanahan appeared to be tracking toward making his season debut in early August, but it's unclear how long the setback will delay his return.

Rays' Shane McClanahan: Next rehab start could be in peril

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash said that Shane McClanahan (triceps) "felt OK, nothing great" during a 10-pitch bullpen session Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The bullpen session came after McClanahan served up two home runs and recorded only two outs in his most recent rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Friday. The southpaw is tentatively scheduled to make the fourth start of his rehab assignment Thursday, but Cash indicated that the Rays haven't yet locked McClanahan in to make an appearance that day. McClanahan has been sidelined all season with a nerve issue in his pitching arm, and he has yet to cover more than 1.2 innings in any of his rehab outings thus far.

Rays' Shane McClanahan: Strikes out three in rehab start

Shane McClanahan (triceps) struck out three batters and allowed one earned run on four hits and no walks over 1.2 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Sunday. After kicking off his rehab assignment Tuesday with a one-inning outing in the rookie-level Florida Complex League, McClanahan moved up to the Tampa Bay Rays' top affiliate for his second outing. The 28-year-old southpaw needed 36 pitches just to record five outs, but he made use of all four of his offerings and averaged 94 miles per hour with his fastball. McClanahan will stick around with Durham and will likely make at least two more rehab starts before the Rays consider bringing him back from the 60-day injured list. He hasn't pitched in a game in the majors since Aug. 2, 2023 after undergoing Tommy John surgery later that year and then being shut down this spring due to left triceps nerve irritation.

Rays' Shane McClanahan: One inning in first rehab outing

Shane McClanahan (triceps) struck out one batter and issued one walk in a scoreless inning during his first rehab start Tuesday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League.McClanahan has had a long road to recovery from his Aug. 21, 2023 Tommy John surgery and more recently, a bout with nerve irritation in his triceps. His outing Tuesday marked his first appearance in affiliated ball in just under two years, though he had been able to make three starts in the Grapefruit League this spring before being shut down. Unsurprisingly, McClanahan was lifted after throwing just one inning and 11 pitches, though he was able to make use of his full arsenal in the appearance. The Tampa Bay Rays will continue to have McClanahan ramp up slowly over the course of his rehab assignment, which will likely last for nearly the entirety of the 30-day window and should eventually move to Triple-A Durham. He appears to be tracking toward a return from the 60-day injured list in early August.

Shane McClanahan (triceps) is scheduled to throw a full-intensity bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.McClanahan was shut down briefly as he battles through a nerve issue in his pitching arm, but he received the go-ahead from Dr. Gregory J. Pearl on June 17 to resume throwing and will take another step in his progression Tuesday.
