Heading into the start of the NBA preseason, we offer a team-by-team look, including projected starting lineups and what to watch for in October as each team sets their rotations for the start of the regular season.
Denver Nuggets
Possible Starters: PG Chauncey Billups,
SG Arron Afflalo, SF Carmelo Anthony, PF Kenyon Martin, C Nene
Other
key players: J.R. Smith, Al Harrington, Chris Andersen, Ty Lawson
Potential Sleepers: J.R. Smith, Al Harrington
Late-round
flier: Arron Afflalo
Preseason
storylines: What happens with 'Melo?
Fantasy Analysis: Perhaps
one of the biggest storylines to follow this preseason will be what
happens with Carmelo Anthony. He's had
an extension on the table from Denver since July and he seems to have
very little intent to accept it. Therefore, the Nuggets will be looking
to get what they can for him rather than letting him walk this offseason
and get nothing. Obviously, several teams are interested in his services
and there is a very strong possibility he could be moved this preseason.
If he does, the Nuggets could look a heck of a lot different by the time
the season starts. We would expect the Nuggets to get back a capable
go-to scorer, but otherwise it would create room for Al Harrington and J.R. Smith to
step up their shot volume significantly. Monitor Arron Afflalo this preseason for signs of a potential breakout
campaign.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Possible Starters: PG Jonny Flynn,
SG Corey Brewer, SF Martell Webster, PF Kevin Love, C Darko Milicic
Other key players: Michael Beasley, Wesley Johnson, Luke Ridnour, Wayne Ellington
Potential
Breakout: Michael Beasley
Potential
Sleeper: Darko Milcic
Preseason storylines: How will Michael Beasley fit in? Can Darko be of use?
Fantasy Analysis: The
Timberwolves will have a different look in 2010-11. Al Jefferson is now in Utah and Michael Beasley will be trying to settle in with his new team in
Minnesota after a somewhat disappointing stint with the Miami Heat.Going
into training camp, signs out of Minnesota were that Beasley would at
least initially be used off the bench, much in the same way he was used
in Miami in his first two NBA seasons. However, there is a much bigger
role available to him in Minnesota than there was for him in Miami, and
he could be a potential breakout candidate should he earn and maintain a
primary role. The other thing to monitor here is the role of Darko Milicic. The Timberwolves are very high on the former No. 2
overall NBA Draft selection and they coaxed him out of returning to
Europe with talks of giving him the chance to play the significant role
he has yet to play in the NBA. He won't ever justify being selected
ahead of players like Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony, but a chance at big minutes could make him useful in
Fantasy.
Portland Trail Blazers
Possible Starters: PG Andre Miller,
SG Brandon Roy, SF Nicolas Batum, PF LaMarcus Aldridge, C Greg Oden
Other key players: Marcus Camby, Jerryd Bayless, Wesley Matthews, Rudy Fernandez, Dante Cunningham, Jeff Pendergraph
Bounce-back
candidate: Andre Miller
Potential
Bust: Marcus Camby
Preseason
storylines: What will the Blazers do at center?
Fantasy
Analysis: The No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Greg Oden has yet to deliver on the promise he showed in college due
to injuries. Microfracture surgery forced him to miss his rookie season,
he missed several weeks due to injury during the 2008-09 season and he
missed the second half of last season after suffering a fractured
kneecap. When he has played, he's had his playing time limited in order
to keep him healthy. He heads to training camp as a big question mark
and could be out for the first few weeks of this season, but the Blazers
picked up a pretty good insurance policy late last season when they
added Marcus Camby. Pay close attention to
updates on Oden's health through the preseason, but also any word from
coach Nate McMillan on how he intends to use both Oden and Camby if and
when both centers are healthy this season. The uncertainty makes Camby a
potential bust candidate if Fantasy owners don't account for a potential
drop in playing time should Oden prove healthy.
Oklahoma City Thunder
Possible Starters: PG Russell Westbrook,
SG Thabo Sefolosha, SF Kevin Durant, PF Jeff Green, C Nenad Krstic
Other key players: James Harden, Daequan Cook, Nick Collison
Bounce-back candidate: Jeff Green
Late-round flier: James Harden
Preseason storylines: Is Jeff Green going to bounce back?
Fantasy Analysis: The
Thunder don't have much uncertainty going into the season, which is good
news for them. Kevin Durant is ready to
take the baton as the new No. 1 overall player in Fantasy and the young
team will have virtually the same rotation from a year ago going into
the season. There aren't any position battles to monitor here, but
Fantasy owners should keep a close eye on Jeff Green in the preseason as he's a candidate to improve upon his
numbers. His production regressed last season as players around him
improved, but Green has the tools to be a 16-6-2 guy as he was two years
ago and possibly more. Fantasy owners should also keep an eye on Nenad Krstic, who is coming off a finger injury suffered at the FIBA
World Championships. Without much depth at the five, Krstic will have
some appeal in deeper formats this season if he can stay healthy.
Utah Jazz
Possible Starters: PG Deron Williams,
SG Raja Bell, SF Andrei Kirilenko, PF Al Jefferson, C Mehmet Okur
Other key players: Paul Millsap, Ronnie Price, C.J. Miles, Gordon Hayward
Late-round
flier: Raja Bell, C.J. Miles
Injury risk: Mehmet Okur
Preseason
storylines: Will Mehmet Okur be
ready to start the season?
Fantasy Analysis: Mehmet Okur's recovery from Achilles' surgery is not going as well as
anticipated and the start of the season seems to be in serious jeopardy
for the Turkish big man. Fantasy owners wiill want to pay close
attention to this situation not only to measure Okur's value going into
the season, but also to take a gamble on Paul Millsap in the middle rounds. As a starter, Millsap has shown
the ability to put up numbers that would make him worthy of a pick in
the first three rounds of any Fantasy format if he were to be guaranteed
a full-time role. That makes Millsap a player Fantasy owners could
capitalize on as a value in the middle rounds and then a possible
sell-high candidate in the early going. However, it will all depend on
Okur's health. Fantasy owners should also monitor the battle between Raja Bell and C.J. Miles for playing
time at the two-guard spot. The winner won't be a Fantasy stud by any
means, but would be a candidate for double-digit scoring and would be
worth a late-round flier in deeper leagues.
