Garoppolo (calf) may have a clearer path to reclaiming the starting job after the 49ers' Week 6 bye with Trey Lance having sprained his left knee during Sunday's 17-10 loss in Arizona, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.

Lance's injury is believed to be nothing more than a 1-2 week issue, but he'll be examined again at the end of this week. Meanwhile, Garoppolo continues to recover from a bruised calf suffered Week 5, which allowed the rookie to direct the offense in each of the 49ers' last six quarters. There was already an expectation Garoppolo would regain his status as San Francisco's No. 1 quarterback when he's back to 100 percent, but if Lance isn't cleared for action in Week 7 and the veteran is, coach Kyle Shanahan can temporarily avoid any talk of a job battle or QB controversy. If neither Garoppolo nor Lance gain clearance, though, Nate Sudfeld could be tasked with a spot start.
