49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo: Mixed results in crushing loss
Garoppolo completed 25 of 40 pass attempts for 257 yards, two touchdowns, an interception and a fumble lost in Sunday's 30-28 loss to the Packers.
It was a tale of two halves for the 49ers' starting quarterback, as he was missing easy throws and holding on to the ball too long in an ugly first half. He mostly turned things around in the second half and led an unlikely comeback before Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and Mason Crosby crushed San Francisco's hopes for a win in the final 37 seconds of the game. Garoppolo looked like he had returned to his 2019 form of above-average play over the first two games of the season, but he began to show some of the flaws that caused his team to mortgage its future and draft Trey Lance (one carry, one yard and a touchdown) with the third overall pick this past offseason. The 29-year-old may still give the 49ers the best chance to win this season, but if he continues to make mistakes like he did in this one, we will start to hear rumblings for Lance to take over. For now, Garoppolo is expected to start in a pivotal NFC West matchup against the Seahawks next Sunday.
