The Steelers released Averett (hamstring) on Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
Pittsburgh originally brought Averett on board back in May, but as the regular season approaches, it's decided to part ways with him. Averett will have to look for another opportunity elsewhere.
