Detroit signed Averett to its practice squad Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Averett was cut loose by San Francisco prior to Week 1 as he dealt with an injury, but he has now found another opportunity with a new team. After Emmanuel Moseley sustained a ruptured ACL on Sunday, the Lions may have an opening at corner on their 53-man roster.
