Smith (undisclosed) was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of Sportstalk 790 Houston reports.
Smith signed with the Chargers this offseason after spending five years in Tampa Bay. He's nearing a return, as he can now practice with the team and must be activated within 21 days. Smith has a career-high of 63 tackles in a season and also has one interception as a pro.
