Smith has been getting more time at nickel back and could see increased playing time as the third cornerback, the Indianapolis Star reports.
Smith appeared in just four games in his rookie season after being unable to reach 100 percent following knee surgery earlier in the year. He also had issues with the knee this spring and isn't yet back to full health, but has nevertheless been able to make a strong impression the first week of training camp. It sounds like he could overtake Darius Butler as the team's nickelback, relegating the veteran to the role of utility player at safety and cornerback.
