Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones said Sunday that Tony Romo (back) is still the team's No. 1 quarterback, but Jones also added that the team will have the luxury of seeing both Prescott and Romo, ESPN.com reports. "We're going to have the luxury of being able to, I think, see them both," Jones said. "Now I don't want to take anything -- presume that Dak is going to be necessarily healthy. I don't want to presume anything like that, but I welcome the opportunity of having Dak playing at this level and Tony back in excellent health."
Although Jones clearly stated that Romo is still the team's No. 1 quarterback, the rest of the owner/GM's quote is a bit confusing, as it seems to suggest Prescott could retain some kind of role. Given that Jones is often misleading or unclear when he speaks to the media, it's probably unwise to make any assumptions based on his comments, even if he elaborates further in the coming days and weeks. While Prescott has unquestionably been fantastic, especially for a rookie, the most likely scenario still has Romo retaking the reins whenever he is physically ready. The most likely date is Week 8 -- Oct. 30 against the Eagles -- as the Cowboys have a Week 7 bye. Of course, even if Romo does take the job back without any questions, he won't have the same long leash he had in past seasons. As for the immediate future, Prescott will face the Packers at Lambeau Field in Week 6, while Romo is scheduled for an MRI on Monday. The MRI may show that Romo's compression fracture has fully healed, which would allow him to start preparing for his return.
