Smythe secured 15 of 20 targets for 129 yards and one score across 16 games with Miami in the 2022 regular season. He also handled two carries for one yard and a touchdown.
Smythe and Mike Gesicki both saw their receiving stats plummet under first-year head coach Mike McDaniel, whose arrival coincided with the Dolphins' usage of two-tight-end sets dropping off significantly. Gesicki is headed for free agency this offseason while Smythe is entering the final year of his contract in 2023, but that hardly guarantees that Smythe will see the overwhelming share of snaps at tight end in 2023. Even if he does, Smythe will operate primarily as a blocker and is unlikely to handle heavy volume as a pass catcher.
