Coach Ron Rivera said Friday that expects Allen (ankle) to return to the practice field soon, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Washington held Friday's session at FedExField, during which Allen was seen throwing passes with fellow reserve quarterback Steven Montez. Allen sustained a season-ending dislocation of his left ankle in November that required a procedure. He tweaked the surgically repaired ankle last Saturday and has been sidelined in the meantime. The Football Team is holding a "QB competition" between graybeard Ryan Fitzpatrick and Taylor Heinicke for the starting job, leaving Allen and Montez to vie for depth chart slotting, assuming Rivera decides to roster three signal-callers in the regular season.
