Hackenberg is listed as the Jets' No. 3 quarterback on their official depth chart released Tuesday, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
While it wasn't surprising that veteran Josh McCown captured the starting role during training camp over the unproven Hackenberg, the second-year signal caller's placement on the depth chart behind Bryce Petty, who missed the preseason finale with a sprained knee, is more unexpected. Petty has indicated that he expects to be ready for the Week 1 matchup with the Bills, but his shaky health may prompt coach Todd Bowles to keep all three of the team's quarterbacks active for that contest. Since the 38-year-old McCown likely isn't the Jets' long-term answer at quarterback, there is a strong possibility that Bowles kicks the tires with the backup options at some point this season, but at this time, it appears a healthy Petty would receive a chance to replace McCown before Hackenberg does.
