Darnold (illness) said Monday that he'll begin light cardio during the Jets' bye week with the hope of returning to action for the team's Week 5 game Oct. 6 in Philadelphia, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Darnold continues to notice gradual improvement since coming down with a case of mononucleosis nearly two week ago, but the quarterback has yet to receive full medical clearance while he contends with an enlarged spleen as a result of the illness. Assuming things improve on that front in the next few days, Darnold will undergo follow-up tests early next week before potentially returning to practice coming out of the bye. Luke Falk drew his first career start in Sunday's loss to the Patriots and would be in store for another turn under center Week 5 if Darnold isn't ready to go by then.
