The Patriots have signed Cam Newton to compete with Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham for the starting quarterback job, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Hoyer would've been the underdog in a 1v1 competition with Stidham and now looks like an extreme longshot to get the Week 1 start. In fact, the 34-year-old may not even have a spot on the 53-man roster, considering he's scheduled to make only $1.05 million in 2020. Ryan Hannable of WEEI reported three months ago that Hoyer was told he'd get a chance to compete for the starting job, but it's now fair to wonder if he'll actually receive a significant number of reps with the first-team offense to make his case.
