Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that Verrett suffered a shoulder injury in practice and needs season-ending surgery to repair his rotator cuff, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. The 32-year-old joined the Niners' practice squad last month and played five defensive snaps in the Christmas Day loss to the Ravens. Since making the Pro Bowl in 2015, Verrett's career has been ruined by injuries, as he's appeared in just 21 games over the last eight seasons.

Verrett (knee) was a limited practice participant Wednesday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Verrett was activated from the team's PUP list earlier Wednesday. The veteran defensive back will finally have the opportunity to see the field again. His last matchup was Week 1 of the 2021 season where he logged five tackles.

Verrett (knee) won't be activated ahead of Sunday's contest against Kansas City, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. Verrett was designated to return from the reserve/PUP list Oct. 5, so he's approaching the 21-day deadline for activation. Barrows surmises that the 49ers could opt to activate him following Sunday's contest and hold him out of action until after the team's Week 9 bye. If Verrett is not activated by Wednesday, he'll remain on IR for the remainder of the campaign.

The 49ers designated Verrett (knee) to return from the reserve/PUP list Wednesday. Verrett will have a 21-day window to practice before being forced to return to the team's active roster, or else he will be placed on season-ending IR. The 31-year-old cornerback has been sidelined since suffering a season-ending torn ACL in Week 1 of last season. Verrett recorded 60 tackles, 10 passes defended and two interceptions while playing 802 defensive snaps over 13 games in 2020, and he'll likely slot into a prominent reserve role behind starters Charvarius Ward and Emmanuel Moseley this season.

The 49ers placed Verrett on the reserve/PUP list Tuesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Verrett, who's recovering from ACL surgery, was hoping to return by Week 1, but with the move, he'll be sidelined for a minimum of four games. In his absence, Ambry Thomas figures to see an increased role behind newcomer Charvarius Ward to start the season.
