Rush completed 12 of 22 passes for 143 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the Falcons' 20-13 loss to the Steelers on Sunday. Rush drew the start with Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix (knee) sidelined, and the journeyman signal-caller battled through his own back spasms to take the field. Rush predictably struggled, taking four sacks and barely completing over 50.0 percent of his passes against an aggressive Steelers defense. Rush's early fourth-quarter interception also resulted in a 35-yard pick-six that extended Pittsburgh's lead to 20-10 at the time. Rush primarily relied on Bijan Robinson -- who was on the receiving end of the quarterback's one touchdown pass from 23 yards out -- but the lackluster performance underscored the signal-caller's limitations. Rush may be reverting back to a reserve role for a Week 2 home matchup against the Panthers next Sunday, as one of either Tagovailoa or Penix might be ready for that contest.

Rush (back) is listed as active against the Steelers on Sunday, Tori McElhaney of the Falcons' official site reports. Rush was reportedly dealing with back spasms Saturday, but the injury will not prevent the veteran quarterback from starting in Sunday's regular-season opener. With both Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix (knee) ruled out, Rush will be the Falcons' starter while undrafted rookie Jack Strand serves as the backup.

Rush reported improvement after experiencing back spasms Saturday and remains on track to start the Falcons' season opener Sunday versus the Steelers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The Falcons didn't express much concern that the back issue would prevent Rush from playing Week 1, as he was never added to the injury report. Assuming Rush avoids any setbacks leading up to the 1 p.m. ET kickoff, he'll direct the Atlanta offense with Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix (knee) having been ruled out for Week 1.

Rush (back) experienced back spasms Saturday, but he's not included on the Falcons' injury report and will start at quarterback in Sunday's game at Pittsburgh, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. With Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) and Michael Penix (knee) both out for Week 1, the Falcons are down to their third option at quarterback in Rush, who will play despite being at less than full health. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand will serve as Rush's backup. Over 42 appearances (16 starts) with the Cowboys and Ravens across parts of eight NFL seasons, Rush has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 6.3 yards per attempt and a 20:14 TD:INT.

Rush will start Sunday's game at Pittsburgh after Tua Tagovailoa (oblique) was ruled out for Week 1 action, NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports. Tagovailoa suffered an oblique strain during Thursday's practice and now will join Michael Penix (knee) on the sideline this weekend. Rush handled the first-team reps in the final two sessions of Week 1 prep and thus will be under center Sunday, with Jack Strand backing him up. Because coach Kevin Stefanski told Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com on Friday that Tagovailoa is "week-to-week," Rush could be in consideration for multiple starts to kick off the 2026 campaign.
