• Cardinals' David Blough: Could compete for backup job

  Blough should get a chance to compete with Colt McCoy (undisclosed) for the Cardinals' backup quarterback role, which takes on added importance with Kyler Murray rehabbing from an ACL tear, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports. McCoy is also recovering from an unspecified surgery, potentially opening the door for Blough to be the first-team quarterback when offseason practices begin. McCoy's injury wasn't nearly as serious as Murray's, so the 36-year-old should be ready for training camp even if he misses part or all of OTAs. Blough is 0-7 as a starter in his NFL career, completing only 57 percent of his pass attempts while throwing more interceptions (nine) than touchdowns (six), and the Cardinals re-signed him in March on a one-year, $1.23 million contract that includes only $76,250 guaranteed,

• Lions' David Blough: Set to be cut

  The Lions are expected to waive Blough if Nate Sudfeld passes his physical in Detroit on Wednesday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports. It initially seemed like Blough had beaten out Tim Boyle for the backup job behind Jared Goff, but it seems that Detroit wants to go in a completely different direction after both of them put together underwhelming preseason performances. However, unless another team saw enough promise in the 27-year-old to put in a waiver claim, Blough would seem like a strong candidate to land on the practice squad.

  Blough agreed to re-sign with the Lions on Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Blough served mainly as Detroit's No. 3 quarterback in 2021 and played just four offensive snaps during his third season with the Lions. He should continue to serve behind starter Jared Goff and primary backup Tim Boyle heading into the 2022 campaign

  Blough (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game against the Bears. While dressing as the No. 2 quarterback behind starter Tim Boyle in last week's 13-10 loss to the Browns, Blough didn't see the field, even though Boyle finished with just 15 completions for 77 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions on 23 attempts (3.3 YPA). Despite leading a listless offense in his first NFL start, Boyle looks like he'll hang on to the No. 2 job for now with top quarterback Jared Goff (oblique) rejoining the lineup Thanksgiving Day after a one-game absence.

• Lions' David Blough: Backup role confirmed

  Blough will enter the season as the No. 2 quarterback after it was determined that Tim Boyle (thumb) will undergo surgery for a broken right thumb, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports. While it's not clear if Boyle will miss the entire season, Blough is set to serve as the backup for as long as the free-agent acquisition is sidelined. When forced into action for five games with Detroit in 2019, Blough managed 5.7 yards per pass attempt with a 54 percent completion rate.
