    Herbig was released from the reserve/retired list Saturday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Herbig announced his retirement from the NFL at the end of July while recovering from a torn rotator cuff. He is theoretically now free to sign with any team, though he hasn't indicated that he plans to play again.

    The Commanders placed Herbig on the reserve/retired list Tuesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports. Herbig ended last season on IR due to a torn rotator cuff but appeared healthy and ready to contribute as a reserve interior offensive lineman for Washington. However, he'll instead hang up the cleats after starting in 30 of his 61 career appearances in the NFL.

  • The Commanders signed Herbig on Friday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Herbig has returned to health after a torn rotator cuff forced him to miss all of Pittsburgh's 2024 season, and he now joins Washington as a veteran option at guard. He'll assist the interior of the Commanders' offensive line in keeping Jayden Daniels, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year, upright during the upcoming season.

    Pittsburgh placed Herbig (shoulder) on the reserve/injured list Tuesday. Herbig tore his rotator cuff during practice in the lead up to Saturday's preseason game against Buffalo. He played in all 17 regular-season games with the Steelers last season (including two starts), and he had the inside track on the starting job at center. Now that Herbig is out for the year, Pittsburgh will turn to rookie second-round pick Zach Frazier to serve under center for the 2024 season.
