• Giants' Cam Skattebo: Opens scoring in Week 1 win

  Skattebo rushed 18 times for 81 yards and a touchdown but wasn't targeted in the passing game during Sunday's 28-20 win over the Cowboys. Skattebo opened the scoring with a three-yard touchdown run to cap the Giants' first possession of the season. The 2025 fourth-round pick looked spry in his return from a season-ending ankle fracture suffered in Week 8 of his rookie campaign. He led the team in both rushing attempts and rushing yards Sunday while Devin Singletary and Tyrone Tracy combined for just 30 rushing yards on eight carries, though Singletary got all four targets among Giants running backs and scored a fourth-quarter receiving touchdown. Skattebo should continue to spearhead the Giants' rushing attack in Week 2 against the Rams on Monday Night Football.

• Giants' Cam Skattebo: Briefly weighed retirement after injury

  Skattebo admitted Thursday in an appearance on FanDuel TV's "Up & Adams" that he briefly considered retirement after sustaining a severe right ankle injury in an Oct. 26 loss to the Eagles. "I would say probably a month in [to the rehab process] I was kind of like, 'Do I really want to do this?'" Skattebo said. "But I got to go back and play." Skattebo told Kay Adams that coming out of college, he had determined that if he ever suffered a major injury, he would step away from football. However, after dislocating his right ankle just eight games into his rookie season, Skattebo determined that he still had too much good football left in him to justify an early retirement. Skattebo underwent surgery a day after suffering the injury and has bounced back well, as the Giants cleared him to take part in drills during June minicamp and made him available with no restrictions to begin training camp. After carrying four times for 19 yards in the Giants' preseason opener, Skattebo didn't play in either of the final two exhibitions, but he was held out merely as precaution. Skattebo is still likely to have his workload scaled back to some degree to begin the 2026 campaign after averaging 19.5 touches per game from Weeks 2 through 7 last season, but he'll head into the Sept. 13 opener versus the Cowboys as the Giants' clear lead option out of the backfield.

  Skattebo is listed as the Giants' starting running back on the team's unofficial depth chart for the preseason finale versus the Jets, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. Skattebo seems to have pulled ahead from the pack as the Giants get their plans in place for the final preseason game. The Giants had previously listed Skattebo as the co-starter with Tyrone Tracy earlier in camp. However, now Skattebo sits unchallenged atop the unofficial depth chart while Tracy, Najee Harris and Devin Singletary are on the next line.

  Skattebo gained more competition for snaps and touches Tuesday when the Giants signed Najee Harris, as reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. New York already seemed to be leaning toward a backfield committee with Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary all working with the offensive starters during the team's preseason opener last Saturday, but Harris potentially adds another running back to the mix once he proves he's fully recovered from an Achilles tear. Skattebo remains at the top of the depth chart, but given his own health concerns after his rookie season was cut short by an ankle injury that required surgery, his workload could be scaled back from 20.8 touches per game he averaged in the five weeks before getting hurt.

  Skattebo (ankle) is participating in team drills at Tuesday's practice, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports. After doing individual work at Monday's minicamp practice, Skattebo graduated to 11-on-11 work Tuesday, suggesting he's at or near 100 percent health coming off ankle surgery. Already seen doing standing back flips this offseason, Skattebo seems ready to roll for the start of training camp next month. He's expected to have a leg up on Tyrone Tracy for the top job in the Giants' backfield under new coach John Harbaugh and OC Matt Nagy.
